Taxi Driver Licensing

A person who wishes to drive a Taxi (8 seats or under) must first obtain a Taxi Drivers Licence. To become a Taxi Driver you will need to meet the following conditions:

  • Be 18 years old or over.
  • Have held a full Driving Licence to drive a car for at least 12 months (an 'R' plate driver cannot hold a Taxi Drivers Licence).
  • Be of satisfactory repute (you must declare all convictions on your application form).
  • Be medically fit (a medical form for completion by your Doctor will be issued where applicable).

The department will review each case on its merits

PSV Licensing - Taxi

If you wish to use a vehicle as a Taxi you will need to meet the following conditions:

  • You or your nominated driver must hold a valid Taxi Drivers Licence.
  • Be of satisfactory repute (see above).

The vehicle you wish to use must pass a PSV Inspection test. This will be carried out at a DVTA Test Centre. A list of test centres is available from
