Applying For A Vocational Driving Licence

Paper Licence Holders

If you wish to apply for a licence to drive vehicles over 3,500kgs, minibuses and buses you must complete driving licence application form DL1 (available from most post offices, local vehicle licensing offices or directly from DVLNI by calling 0845 402 4000 and enclose your current driving licence.

If this is your first application to drive these larger vehicles, or you are renewing your licence at age 45 or over, you must get a doctor to fill in a medical report form DLM1 (which is also available from the Driver Vehicle Testing Agency and DVLNI) and ensure that all the relevant questions are completed.

If you have sent us a DLM1 medical report in the last 12 months or you hold a full Vocational EC/EEA licence and are under 45, do not send one now, unless you have a medical condition which could affect your ability to drive.

You must also enclose original documentation confirming your identity (Full list of acceptable identity documents) and a passport sized colour photograph taken against a plain light background (for photograph criteria). Send your completed application, identity documents and photograph to Driver Licensing Division, DVLNI, County Hall, Castlerock Road, Coleraine, BT51 3TB.
