Applying For A Duplicate Vehicle Registration Certificate V5C(NI)

If your Vehicle Registration Certificate V5C(NI) (or the V5C/2 Section 10 New Keeper Supplement) has been lost, stolen or destroyed, and you need to apply for a replacement use a V34(NI) Application Form for Vehicle Registration Certificate V5C(NI), you will be charged £25

The downloadable V34(NI) Form is also available from DVLNI Local Offices and Post Office® Branches.

Alternatively, if you are already registered as the vehicle keeper with DVLNI and need a duplicate Vehicle Registration Certificate V5C(NI), (i.e. there are no changes to your personal or vehicle details) you may apply for one by calling (028) 7034 1514 using a debit/credit card for payment.

The fee is not applicable if:

  • you are using the existing Registration Certificate V5C(NI) to notify changes.
  • you are the new keeper and the previous keeper has failed to notify DVLNI of the change. You must be in possession of the New Keeper Supplement (Section 10) of the Registration Certificate V5C(NI) and send it to DVLNI with the V34(NI) application form.
  • the vehicle has been categorised as "C" salvage by the insurance industry and they have destroyed the Registration Certificate (N.B. Categories A, B or D are not exempt from the fee. A = Scrap only; B = Break for spare parts only; C = Repairable but repair costs exceeded vehicle value; D = Repairable). DVLNI will carry out checks to ensure that the vehicle criteria are met. Further information about the categorisation of a vehicle is available from the insurance company. DVLNI is unable to divulge this information.

DVLNI is required to recover the costs of its operations through fees levied for services. A review of the current fee structure highlighted that changes were required to meet the rising costs. A Consultation Paper on Fee Proposals for Driving Licences and Vehicle Registration was issued in May 2003. As a result, it was decided to introduce a fee of £25 for replacement Registration Certificates.

If, for any reason, DVLNI is unable to issue a replacement Vehicle Registration Certificate V5C(NI) the fee will be refunded.

The Vehicle Identification number (Chassis number) will be required for a Duplicate Registration Certificate V5C(NI), this can be found on a plate in the engine compartment. If the vehicle requires a Vehicle Identity Check (VIC) we will not be able to issue the Registration Certificate until Driver & Vehicle Testing Agency (DVTA) notify us that it has passed the Identity Check.

For more information go to ADVICE ON BUYING A USED VEHICLE.

REMEMBER: The Registration Certificate V5C(NI) does not prove legal ownership
