Exporting Vehicles
If you take your vehicle abroad for a temporary visit (for example, on holidays or for a business trip), make sure that you have your Registration Certificate V5C(NI). If you do not have a Registration Certificate you should make an application for a Duplicate Registration Certificate V5C(NI) using form V34(NI), (£25 fee is applicable). You should apply well in advance of your journey and you should also ensure that you are able to meet the requirements of any International and National obligations in regard to licence and taxation.
If your Vehicle Licence Disc is due to expire while you are abroad, you may apply to re-licence your vehicle by post, to DVA, up to 6 weeks in advance. If you are able to give a dispatch address abroad, the vehicle licence can be sent to you there.
Remember to check with your insurance company that your vehicle is properly insured for use abroad.
If you are taking your vehicle permanently out of Northern Ireland and you have a Registration Certificate V5C(NI) you will be required to complete Section 11, sign and date the declaration and return this Section only to DVA. You must then take the rest of your Registration Certificate to the country you are exporting the vehicle to and surrender this to the foreign authority.
More detailed guidance is contained in Section 11 of the Guidance Notes and our information leaflet titled, Taking a vehicle out of the country
