Identity Checking

If you are registering a used or imported vehicle you will need to produce documentation confirming both your name and address.

This is to ensure that keeper details provided at the time of registration are genuine, thereby preventing the fraudulent registration of vehicles. Name and address checks are required on all applications.

  • Identity Checks are applicable to used and imported vehicles (including those 'transferred from GB').
  • Identity documents must be produced to verify name and address.
  • These checks will be carried out by DVA Licensing and by certain approved dealers.
  • In order to license and register your vehicle you must provide, along with your application, either your DVA photocard driving licence (which has been issued from 01/04/99) or one original document from each of the lists below.
  • Copies are unacceptable.

Documentation Confirming your Name


  • Current DVA Photocard Driving Licence.
  • Current passport.
  • Marriage certificate.
  • Decree nisi/absolute.
  • Birth certificate.
  • Electoral Identity Card.

Documentation Confirming your Address


  • Utility Bill issued within the last 3 months - gas, electricity, water, landline telephone.
  • Bank/Building Society statement issued within the last 3 months.
  • Medical Card.
  • Rates bill for current year or Rent book for current year.
