Every vehicle must be registered as part of keeping it on the road. This involves giving the vehicle a unique identification, a Registration Mark (number plates) and giving DVLNI details of both the vehicle and the keeper.

Proof that this has been done and that the details are correct and current is achieved by means of a Registration Certificate V5C(NI).
