How Do I Get A Registration Number For My Vehicle?

If you buy a brand new vehicle, the dealer will usually arrange for it to be registered for you. The vehicle may have been allocated a registration number from a supply held by the garage. If the garage has not allocated a registration number, once an application to register and licence is received at the Local Office a registration number will be allocated to the vehicle.

Each Local Office issue their own registration numbers. When you register your vehicle you will be given the next registration number available. Registration Numbers cannot be chosen. The Registration Certificate V5C(NI) will be sent to you within 6 weeks.

When you receive your Registration Certificate V5C(NI) from DVLNI, it is your responsibility to check that all the details are correct. If there are any errors, send it back to Record Amendments Section, DVLNI, County Hall, Castlerock Road, Coleraine, BT51 3TA and explain which details are incorrect. A Registration Certificate V5C(NI) shows the registered keeper (the person who keeps and/or uses the vehicle, not necessarily the legal owner of the vehicle.) It gives the keeper's name and address, the registration mark and other information about the vehicle.
