Selling A Vehicle

Disposal Of A Vehicle

With the introduction of Continuous Registration (CR) it is the responsibility of the registered keeper to notify DVA if you transfer, dispose or scrap a vehicle. You can do this by following the relevant information below.

Selling Your Vehicle - Private Sale

Selling Your Vehicle - To Trade

Scrapping Your Vehicle

Alternatively write to DVA or e-mail us giving your name and address details, the registration number, name and address of the person you gave the vehicle to and the date you transferred/disposed of the vehicle.

On receipt of a notification of Keeper disposal, DVA will issue a Disposal Acknowledgement Receipt, confirming you are no longer the Keeper of the vehicle. This should be issued within 4 weeks.

If your vehicle has substantial accident damage you should return Sections 1-8 of your Registration Certificate V5C(NI) to your insurance company and if you dispose of your vehicle to trade complete section 9 and notify DVA of the vehicle status.

If your vehicle has been stolen you should report it immediately to the PSNI, who will notify DVA. If your vehicle has a cherished number you can apply for the transfer after 12 months only if the vehicle has been recorded as stolen by the PSNI and not recovered and DVA records noted accordingly.

As soon as the vehicle is recorded by the PSNI and DVA as recovered then the transfer can take place immediately.

If you want to keep the registration mark you must transfer it before disposal of the vehicle, otherwise entitlement to the number will be lost.
