When Can I Claim A Refund?
You can get a refund for each full month still to run on the disc. To get a refund for an unused month, the disc must be sent before the first day of the month.How To Claim A Refund
To claim a refund you should use form V90(NI) available at Post Office ® Branches, Local Offices and on-line. Your refund will be dealt with within 9 working days and sent to you in the form of an account payee only cheque.Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN)
If you request a refund of the licence duty you will be required to provide full details of the reason for the refund and you must give full details to DVLNI about the new owner. A SORN declaration must be made if you are the registered keeper and you have not sold the vehicle and you are keeping the vehicle off the road.Where To Claim A Refund

You may apply for a refund even if you have lost your licence disc or the vehicle has been stolen. If you have lost your licence disc you will have to apply for a duplicate tax disc on form V35(NI), £7.00 fee and enclose V90(NI) for the refund. Alternatively you can complete form V90(NI) only. There is a section on the form, which allows DVLNI to deduct the £7 fee from your refund. The refund will be paid from the date we receive the application. If your vehicle has been stolen you will need to obtain a letter from the PSNI and send it to DVLNI with form V90(NI). There is a 10% handling charge on the cost of a 6 month licence but this is not included in any refund.
Return Of A Disabled Exempt Disc
If you sell your vehicle or if your entitlement ends, you should return your exempt licence. If you are licensing a new vehicle with your exemption certificate, enclose the old tax disc with your application.
