Refunding Your Tax Disc

When Can I Claim A Refund?

You can get a refund for each full month still to run on the disc. To get a refund for an unused month, the disc must be sent before the first day of the month.

How To Claim A Refund

To claim a refund you should use form V14(NI) available at Post Office ® Branches, Local Offices and on-line. Your refund will be sent to you in the form of an account payee only cheque.

New vehicle tax refund rules

From 1 January 2009 only the Registered keeper or the last previous Registered keeper of the vehicle will be entitled to a refund of vehicle tax. This means a keeper who has received a Registration Certificate (V5C(NI) in their name from DVA. We must also have been told that:
  • the vehicle has been scrapped, exported, stolen, sold or transferred; or
  • you have made a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) for the vehicle and it has not been taxed within 21 days from the date of the SORN; or
  • you have changed the vehicle's tax class to a nil value tax class (such as "Disabled")
  • Where To Claim A Refund

The completed form and vehicle licence should then be sent to:

    Refund Section
    DVA Licensing
    County Hall
    Castlerock Road
    Coleraine
    BT51 3TA

You may apply for a refund even if you have lost your licence disc or the vehicle has been stolen. If you have lost your licence disc you will have to apply for a duplicate tax disc on form V20(NI), £7.00 fee and enclose V14(NI) for the refund. Alternatively you can complete form V33(NI) only. There is a section on the form, which allows DVA Licensing to deduct the £7 fee from your refund. The refund will be paid from the date we receive the application. If your vehicle has been stolen you will need to obtain a letter from the PSNI and send it to DVA Licensing with form V14(NI). There is a 10% handling charge on the cost of a six month licence but this is not included in any refund.

Return Of A Disabled Exempt Disc

If you sell your vehicle or if your entitlement ends, you should return your exempt licence. If you are licensing a new vehicle with your exemption certificate, enclose the old tax disc with your application.
